Does Your Style Matter?

Does your style matter?  The short answer is YES! Of course, your style matters! All of our style matters.  Why?  Well, there are a bunch of reasons…

The first being that our style is literally the first thing people learn about us upon meeting us.  Yep, before you even speak a word, your style is speaking.  Whether you’re dressed great and feeling your best or just rolled out of bed, your style is speaking volumes about you.  It could say “I really put myself together today” or it could say “I woke up late”.  Inasmuch as we hate to admit it, we’re making judgments about people and how they’ll interact with us based on their appearance; and people are making that same judgement about you as well.

The second being that while people are making judgments about you and your style, it also communicates how you value people.  Forget about what my style says about me for a second.  If  I show up to meet someone for the first time (personally or professionally) how I 'm presenting myself speaks to how I value that person, doesn't it?  If I'm showing up to a job interview wrinkled, if I'm showing up to a date without makeup or brushing my hair, if I'm showing up to my  office in sweat pants, that all speaks volumes about how seriously I'm taking these events and people.  People understand how much (or little) you value them and their time based on how you present.

Lastly, it matters to you and for you.  Haven't you noticed that you FEEL so much better when you know you look great?  And haven't you also noticed that you have this inclination to hide when you're not looking or feeling your best?  And of course, inevitably, that's when you end up running into someone!

So while you may think style is superficial (and it certainly can be) it doesn't have to be; and whether we like it or not, our style speaks volumes about us, how we value ourselves, and how we value those around us.

5 Fashion Mistakes That Are Aging You

Age appropriate style is a real thing.  I get it. Just because we’re a certain age doesn’t mean we should lose who we are and trade in our heels for a pair of orthopedic shoes.  HOWEVER, have you ever considered the fact that trying to look too young is in fact making you look older? There are a few other things that will instantly age you that we often don’t think about. Take a look below for the 5 fashion habits that are making us look way older than we are.

1)    Dressing Too Young

Age is just a number! I’m right there with you! But sometimes, we need to reel it in a bit.  Whether it’s a piece that’s too of-the-moment, too revealing, or just too young, these looks can age us 10 years (easily).  I understand that 30 is nowhere near old; but if you have a 16 year old cousin who no longer wants her Hello Kitty baby tee (I don’t care how great your abs are) that is not an invitation for you to take it.  If you like the tiny tee look, no problem.  Why not a basic tee, a pair of denim, and a fun necklace?  Your style doesn’t need to be buttoned up ALL the time; but it does need to be age appropriate, otherwise you’ll look like a 30 year old in a 16 year old’s clothing…and no one wants that.

As far as dressing too sexy – I always tell my clients “Chic is always sexy, sexy is not necessarily always chic”.  Keep that in mind and consider the benefits of highlighting a silhouette as opposed to exposing skin.

2)    The Wrong Fit

You can have clothes that are current, and classic – but if they don’t fit properly, it’ll be a mess.  In addition to pieces that are too tight/small pieces that are too large are also not helping the cause.  Swimming in your clothes (if they’re not meant to be oversized) can cause a look (no matter how cool) to look dated, and when our clothes look old, so do we.  Take note of your jackets/blazers.  Where are your shoulder seams hitting?  They should be aligned with your shoulders.  Pay attention to excess fabric around your waist and in the sleeves.  Simple tips like these can keep you looking sharp, fresh, and young!

This one really gets me!  I’m not saying you have to be in sky-high stilettos to avoid looking old, on the contrary!  You can be current and chic in a simple pair of flats, but please don’t underestimate the importance of an age appropriate shoe!  A shoes really can ruin the whole look.

4)    Wearing The Wrong Bra Size

The wrong bra size changes everything.  It affects silhouette,  posture and the fit of your clothes.  If your bra doesn’t fit properly, the likelihood is that the rest of you clothes don’t fit properly either.  I know what a pain bra shopping can be, but do yourself a favor:  go out, and get fitted.  Get fitted, get the right bra one time and be done!

5)    The Wrong Makeup

Whether it’s the wrong shade of foundation, a frosty lipstick, or a too-blue eye shadow, the wrong makeup can really do some damage.  I know that makeup can be frustrating, and many of us like to be all natural – that is aok.  However, if you’re going to take the time to buy and apply makeup, be sure you’re buying the right tones and colors for your skin.  This doesn’t mean you have to go to Sephora and spend millions.  Even if you’re into drugstore makeup (which often times, is just as good as the high end stuff) take the time to test and get opinions on what looks best on YOU.
